Clean skies to save lives - cut coal mine pollution

Did you know that coal mining is the largest single source of particulate pollution in NSW and that each year this kind of air pollution causes more than 1,000 premature deaths nationally, and more than a thousand hospital admission for children under 14?

The NSW Government wants to hear from the public about air pollution, so let's take the opportunity to tell them to crack down on coal mine pollution to clean the skies and save lives.

In the last ten years, an intensification of open-cut coal mining in the Hunter Valley has coinciding with an accelerated increase in dust particle pollution, which is damaging people’s health in the Hunter Valley and beyond.

EPA modelling shows that the national standard for the smallest and most dangerous of these (particles of less than 2.5 microns in diameter, called PM2.5) “is unlikely to be attained in Singleton and Muswellbrook into the future as coal production in the Hunter Valley is expected to continue to increase.”

The modelling showed we need to halve human-produced sources of this pollution to meet  national air quality standards in the Hunter's two biggest towns.

Tell the EPA to clean up coal pollution

Make a submission to the NSW EPA's Clean Air Plan telling them you want them to take action to clean up the air pollution from coal mining.
