This creek below has been contaminated by the abandoned Mt Oxide mine in north-west Qld. The mining company walked away and left the site in a terrible state.
The water left behind in the un-rehabilitated mine pit contains a toxic mix of heavy metals and other chemicals, and when it rains it flows into surrounding waterways.
This is what happens when we let big miners cut and run.
Before any more mines close, let's make sure the miners are forced to fix their own mess. It’s time to end this scandal. Chip in now, to make BIG MINING clean up their BIG MESS.
Currently there are some 50,000 abandoned mines across the country. The companies have simply walked away and left the sites un-rehabilitated.
Some of the mines that have been abandoned are huge and the cost of repairing the land and water resources will run into billions of dollars. And its taxpayers, like you and me, who are footing the bill.
More and more mines are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy right now. We need urgent changes to ensure that we are not left to deal with yet another round of disaster.
