Santos should withdraw from Narrabri gasfield after CEO departure

Lock the Gate Alliance and farmers from North West NSW are urging Santos to take the opportunity provided by the stepping down of its CEO David Knox to do the right thing for the community and walk away from its controversial Narrabri coal seam gas project.

Lock the Gate NSW Coordinator Georgina Woods said the departure of the controversial CEO and a current ‘strategic review’ being conducted by Santos allows the company to pull out of the controversial Narrabri Gas Project.

"Santos has taken a $808 million write down in the value of the Narrabri Gas Project, acquired with the purchase of Eastern Star Gas for $924 million four years ago," she said.

"Santos should cut it's losses and drop this risky and unwelcome project now. There is no future for the Narrabri gas project."

Wee Waa farmer Sarah Ciesiolka said, "This project is no longer worth very much to Santos, but the groundwater and land it will put at risk is priceless for all of us.

"Communities around North West New South Wales are declaring themselves gasfield free. We don't want this project and are looking forward to a gas-free future.

"We hope Santos take this opportunity to drop the Narrabri Gas Project altogether."
