Lock the Gate welcomes NSW ALP call to cancel Shenhua’s Watermark coal mine

Lock the Gate Alliance has welcomed NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley’s call for the Shenhua Watermark coal mine on the Liverpool Plains to be cancelled and the area protected from mining and called on Premier Gladys Berejiklian to make safeguarding farmland and aquifers bi-partisan policy in New South Wales.

Lock the Gate Alliance Coordinator Phil Laird said, “We welcome the Labor Party’s call to cancel this coal licence and the Opposition Leader’s visit to the Liverpool Plains to see for himself what is at stake.

“The Liverpool Plains and the aquifer farmers rely on to grow our food and fibre there are irreplaceable.

“It just makes sense to make NSW’s productive farmland and the aquifers that support it off-limits to mining of any kind. It’s not too late for the NSW Government to cancel this exploration licence and stop this mine.”
