Battle for Berrima Rally at NSW Parliament House
When: 3.30pm Thursday 25th August
Where: 6 Macquarie Street Sydney
What: Pre debate rally calling on the Baird Government to protect the Southern Highlands from destructive coal mining
A petition with more than 16,000 signatures calling on the Baird Government to protect the Southern Highlands from destructive coal mining will be debated on the floor of the NSW Legislative Assembly.
The petition is a potent demonstration of the mounting democratic opposition to the plan by Korea’s POSCO and Hume Coal to develop a massive underground coal mine in the Southern Highlands and within the Sydney water catchment.
The debate follows the presentation of the petition to local MP Pru Goward earlier this month on the steps of the courthouse in historic Berrima, which will be ground zero for the massive underground mine.
The petition was coordinated by Battle for Berrima and demonstrates the level of democratic opposition of coal mining in the Southern Highlands.
“We are pleased that the many serious implications of the planned coal mine can be debated openly, transparently and in the seat of our democracy”, said Battle for Berrima President Ken Wilson.
Community campaigners and affected residents will be attending the debate and will hold a pre-debate rally outside of Parliament House.
