Message the Premier - Acland Decision

Today, Acland farmers won the first ever community challenge against a coal project, the Acland Stage 3 expansion on the Darling Downs, in the High Court of Australia.

It’s a historic moment.

But it doesn’t mean the project is permanently beaten.  It means that it will now be sent back to the Queensland Land Court for a fresh review of the entire merits of the project.

The Premier has done the right thing, standing up to New Acland Coal and their advertising campaign, and waiting for the High Court decision.

Let’s thank her for that, and ask her to now finally end the uncertainty and negotiate the withdrawal of the mining project, whilst stepping in to support workers and the local community.

Leave a message for the Premier and Deputy Premier in the form at the bottom of this page and we’ll print them all out and present them with it.

Please thank them for what they have done so far to respect the High Court, but explain the effect on the local community has been too great and a restructuring package for workers and withdrawal of the project is needed.  The Darling Downs foodbowl is no place for a coal mine.

    Dear Premier

The Darling Downs prime farmland / foodbowl is no place for a water-guzzling climate-wrecking coalmine! With increasing temperatures, bushfires and drought, do the right thing by our farming communites, workers, & future generations – by Protecting Water, restructuring mine work into agriculture & renewable energy jobs, & taking fossil-fuelled Global Heating SERIOUSLY by stopping this coal project.

    Sincerely

    J. Nelson

    Dear Premier,

Relief all round – thank goodness your common sense has prevailed over other’s self interest. Hope it is a trend that will catch on in Canberra [ but I’m not holding my breath ].

    Many thanks indeed,

    Ann.

Congratulations Premier on the stand you have taken to protect farming land and precious water resources in our Darling Downs. The High court decision is truly significant in addressing climate change in this country. Please now see this process through to secure and protect the local economy and community into the future.

    Best Wishes and thanks!

Congratulations on the intelligent, essential decision you have made to protect farming land, the ability of farmers to make a good living from this land and to prioritise this and, critically, water safety for this and ALL generations by stopping air, soil and water polluting coal mines entering!!! Hoorah, Premier! Yearly environmental changes underline the value of our nationally dwindling water supplies. And the increasing importance of renewable energy sources which are clean for the total environment and becoming cheaper and prove, right now, to be the cheapest source of energy.

    Dear Premier and Deputy Premier

Thank you for your support of the High Court. The ongoing case has had a huge impact on the local community. A restructuring package for workers and withdrawal of the project is needed. The Darling Downs food bowl is no place for a coal mine.

Thank you Premier for supporting the High Court’s decision over the Ackland mine decision. Please ensure this is an end to an environmentally disastrous proposal. To risk the future of the Darling Downs food bowl is just not acceptable and makes no sense.

The Government must negotiate a withdrawal of the extension project.

    Premier,

Thank you for supporting the High Court and its decision over the Ackland Mine extension. But as our state’s foodbowl the area needs to be protected from future activity which threatens this.

The Darling Downs is still suffering from serious water issues, continuing on last year’s drought in the area, their rainfall is well below average. Activities such as coal mining, as you well know, use vast amounts of water.

The Darling Downs needs sustainable industry which give long term jobs and do not jeopardize the future of the area, our state, our country and our planet.

    Sincerely,

This fight has gone on for far too long – it’s high time the Darling Downs was left alone. It is clear that people do not want any more mining around Acland! The Queensland Land Court should bury the idea forever.

To the Premier, Thank you for waiting for the High Court decision on the 3rd stage coal mine in the Darling Downs. Acland had a win in the high court, so now please put an end to further coal mining in the Darling Downs Food Bowl and negotiate a withdrawal of the project, while stepping up to support workers and local community in farming a certainty.

    Dear Premier and Deputy Premier,

I want to thankyou for respecting the High Courts decision with respect to the Acland mining operations in the Darling Downs.

Now the action to take should be clear for the people, land and the future.

We cannot have coal in a food bowl.

Please do what is needed for the community now to support workers with a restructure and direct your resources and support behind regenerative agriculture and renewable energy generation as a way of ensuring a successful future and healed country for our regional Agricultural sector.

Looking forward to the opportunities this finding has made possible for Qld to truely honour the promise of jobs for a future,

    Respectfully,

Good on you for awaiting the High Court decision on Acland. Smart move

We (you) should refuse to approve all new coal projects. We should have started transitioning away from fossil fuels years ago.

The time has come to support only clean, renewable and sustainable projects and employment. Our climate and environment are at crisis point.

We are fast running out of time and must act immediately to reverse climate change and warming. I am not looking forward to a drought and fire filled future

Thank you Premier for having the wisdom, courage, and respect to wait out the High Court decision. It has been a momentous decision for the ordinary person & so rewarding to be heard by Government in the person of yourself. Staying strong & clear is hard exhausting work & the community of Acland will need revitalising & supporting in many ways. Please end the uncertainty by completely withdrawing the project & allowing the community to heal & help itself restore their lives & livelihood in ways that sustain their families and their land now & well into the future.

    In gratitude & high expectation

Please do not allow more coal mining either above or below ground in the area around Acland. Three decades ago I had relations who had a farm on the Darling Downs close to Acland. I am well aware of the fantastic soil of the Darling Downs for general farming or for livestock farming. If we are to feed ourselves or to feed the ever increasing number of mouths around the world then we MUST stop allowing the beautiful fertile soils is the old old volcanic area of SE Queensland to be dug up for a few tons of coal which is going to add the the huge amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere which is obviously increase the dangers present in current day climate change.

Thank you Premier for standing by your community and against yet another coal company – New Acland Coal. The dreadful effects long-term for water, air and the lives of people in the area is incalculable. Otherwise, hospitals and doctors would be overstressed looking after people affected for their lifetimes. Look at the United States: what a mess, not only with Covid-19 but with mining and fracking. You’re a hero!

The foodbowl on the Darling Downs is a foodbowl not a coal mine! Oh yes that’s right some liberal and labor politicians eat coal don’t they! For the sake of all Australians do NOT approve any more new coal mines. I will never vote Labor again if the party stays in the pockets of this disgusting industry. Renewable Energy is the way forward.
