Wednesday’s announcement by the NT government to ignore expert recommendations and fast-track fracking production in the Beetaloo sub-basin is a betrayal to all Territorians.
We can’t allow these lies to enable a fracking industry that will worsen climate change impacts, compromise groundwater, and threaten Aboriginal people and culture.
The announcement is a setback, but not the end of this fight. There is still a long way to go before applications are submitted, and gas companies will mostly still need specific approval for each project, including potentially by the Federal Government.
It’s time to discuss next steps, strategise and mobilise against fracking.
