Lock the Gate Alliance says the Crisafulli Government’s doubling down on fossil gas and review of emissions reduction targets will only benefit multinational corporations and leave Queenslanders with more expensive bills and degraded farmland.
Alliance National Coordinator Ellen Roberts said, “The coal seam gas industry is damaging Queensland’s prime farmland and precious water. Supporting an expansion of the gas industry will only benefit huge multinational petroleum companies, and leave ordinary Queenslanders worse off.
“More than 16,000 polluting coal seam gas wells have been drilled across farmland in inland Queensland, including on priority agricultural land, putting our food security at risk.
“More gas is likely to be syphoned up by the existing large corporations who export Queensland gas at Gladstone for overseas buyers. Gas is among the most expensive forms of energy - it’s definitely not going to bring the price of power down for ordinary Queenslanders.
“Recent university studies in the United States show gas is likely to be as polluting if not more so than coal. Queensland is already struggling with more severe, more frequent extreme weather, driven by the climate crisis. The LNP’s review of Queensland’s commendable emissions reduction targets while doubling down on polluting gas risks worsening these already terrifying weather disasters while increasing Queenslander’s energy bills.”
