Cut gas, cut bills, protect what matters

Gas prices have tripled. The global energy crisis is the kind of volatility gas companies thrive on, but not Aussie farmers or factories. Drilling for more gas threatens our water, forests and farming communities while keeping NSW chained to expensive volatile gas. But there’s a better choice for NSW.

New research commissioned by Lock the Gate and prepared by Springmount Advisory shows NSW can slash gas use by 52% by 2035, using technology that's available right now, from heat pumps to electric boilers run on secure home grown renewable electricity.

Three-quarters of everything NSW currently uses gas for has a commercially available substitute, without waiting for new technology, new pipelines, or new gas fields. This means we can protect the Pilliga from coal seam gas, protect farmland from pipelines and secure energy for industry. Are you in?

Gas use in NSW has already been falling for a decade, dropping 2.9% a year on average, mostly without any clear government policy driving it. Imagine what a proper plan could do.

We’re joining forces with a powerful alliance of unions, health experts, community groups and environmental organisations calling on the NSW Government to step up and put an economy-wide gas demand reduction strategy at the heart of its 2026 Net Zero Plan.

What we're calling for:

The coalition, which includes Lock the Gate Alliance, the Australian Manufacturers Workers Union, the Electrical Trades Union, the Climate Council, Doctors for the Environment Australia and Nature Conservation Council NSW is urging Minister Penny Sharpe to:

1. Set a state-wide gas reduction target with clear targets for different uses, such as household and industrial heating;

2. Fast-track electrification where it can happen quickly — in homes, commercial buildings, and low-heat manufacturing — so that remaining gas can support the heavy industries where switching will take longer;

3. Prioritise support to renters, apartment dwellers and low-income households, who are hit hardest by high energy bills and have the least ability to make the switch on their own.

TELL MINISTER PENNY SHAPE THAT ITS TIME FOR NSW TO GET OFF GAS

TAKE ACTION NOW

"Gas is the low hanging fruit to cut NSW emissions- a comprehensive, economy-wide, gas demand reduction strategy in NSW is a path to energy security."

What's at stake:

"Since technology already exists to rapidly reduce gas use in NSW, there is no need to turn the Pilliga into an industrial gasfield or drive a high pressure pipeline through productive farmland. We can have water security, nature security and energy security — with a clear, economy-wide gas demand reduction plan."

— Harriet Kater, Lock the Gate Alliance Clean Industry Coordinator

Getting NSW off gas is a crucial part of protecting the Liverpool Plains, the Pilliga Forest, the largest temperate woodland in eastern Australia, and the Great Artesian Basin beneath it.

It's about standing with Gomeroi Traditional Owners and farming communities who have spent fifteen years fighting against coal seam gas.

We can protect what we love once and for all with your help in freeing NSW from gas.

The numbers:

  • NSW can slash gas use by 52% (64PJ) by 2035
  • NSW gas prices have increased 277% since 2011
  • NSW gas use is already declining - dropping by 2.9% each year over the last decade
  • Commercially available technologies can replace 74% of NSW gas use today
