Historic day for Queensland as Miles government protects the Channel Country from new oil and gas

The Miles Government has introduced regulations into the Queensland Parliament that give effect to the commitment made in December 2023 to protect the floodplains of the Channel Country in Western Queensland from new oil and gas developments.

Lock the Gate Alliance National Coordinator Ellen Roberts said, “This is a historic day for Queensland. The precious Channel Country floodplains of the Lake Eyre Basin in Western Queensland have been protected from new oil and gas developments.

“These floodplains hold great significance for Traditional Owners, who have been calling for these protections alongside graziers, other members of the Far Western QLD community, and Queenslanders all across the state.

“The Channel Country Rivers and floodplains of the Lake Eyre Basin are some of the last free flowing desert rivers in the world, and they sustain a clean, grass fed beef industry and a growing nature-based tourism industry.

“Today is a day for celebration, and the Miles Government should be congratulated for taking this bold step, and protecting the unique Channel Country rivers and floodplains of Queensland’s Lake Eyre Basin.”

“Now the Liberal National Party should also express their support for these important protections for the floodplains of the Lake Eyre Basin."
