No coal mining in koala habitat
Koalas are an Australian national treasure - but they’re in trouble. Koala numbers have dropped by over 50% since colonisation, and they’re falling fast due to the twin threats of habitat destruction and climate change.
New research commissioned by Lock the Gate and Environmental Advocacy in Central Queensland shows that many of the proposed new coal mines in Queensland will clear the trees needed by koalas for food and shelter.
Petition text:
Dear Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek,
Our much loved koalas are under threat from the twin threats of habitat loss and climate change. We urge you to protect Australia’s koalas and refuse coal and gas projects that clear koala habitat and contribute to global warming. Australia’s environment laws must be fixed to ensure stronger protections for koala habitat to ensure they’re not driven to extinction.
