Lock the Gate Alliance has today welcomed the remarkable announcement that the NSW Government will reject all future greenfield coal mines due to climate change concerns.
The move follows the recent Land and Environment Court Decision where the Rocky Hill proposal was rejected due to the impact coal from the mine would have on global warming.
Lock the Gate Spokesperson April Firth said the NSW Government had taken a step in the right direction, but more could be done.
“This decision will go a long way to reducing NSW’s carbon footprint, however there are other fossil fuel projects in the works that must also be rejected,” she said.
“That includes Santos’ Narrabri gasfield, which would also contribute significantly to the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.
“What’s more, we’ve recently learnt that scientists have confirmed the presence of a colony of Pilliga Yowies living near the proposed gasfield site.
“These majestic creatures are listed as vulnerable to extinction, and this is yet another reason why this destructive proposal cannot go ahead.”
