3 Expanded Coal Mine Approvals = Disaster for Nature
In a devastating move, Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has just approved three giant thermal coal mine expansions in NSW in one day.
This month the Albanese Government refused to put a climate trigger in national environment laws and now they’ve doubled down and approved three massive climate bombs.
The mines will directly clear over 500 hectares of Koala habitat and produce 1.5 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – which is 3 times Australia’s total annual emissions.
These emissions will cause climate change that fuels extreme weather, threatens our communities and drives our natural areas and wildlife to the brink.
And it’s not just these projects that are a problem - there are 116 new coal and gas projects proposed across Australia, including massive clearing of Koala habitat for coal and fracking across Northern Australia.
But Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek plans to lead a Global ‘Nature Positive’ Summit in Sydney in two weeks time as if she cares about our wildlife.
We’re calling this a global greenwashing attempt, and we’ll be gathering there on Tuesday, to call it out directly.
