Winchester South is an open-cut coal mine proposed as the first project in Queensland for Whitehaven Coal, a company who have been repeatedly exposed as environmental criminals.
Winchester South would mine up to 17 million tonnes of coal every year for 28 years, producing a total of 547Mt of CO2e. It would clear at least 2,000 hectares of habitat which is home to important or threatened species such as the koala, greater glider, ornamental snake, and squatter pigeon in an area that is already over 90% cleared. It would drain 183 million litres of local groundwater on average each year and discharge mine-affected wastewater directly into the Isaac River.
We will be holding a month of action in Brisbane City to call on Coordinator General Mike Kaiser to SAY NO to Winchester South!
We will have signs and flyers and will be talking to people as they enter the building and handing out flyers to decision makers and the general public.
Join us outside 1 William Street from 8.30am on Tuesday the 24th of October to send a strong message to decision makers that Queensland does not want a new open cut coal mine at Winchester South.
