Coal proponent Vitrinite continues to extract coal at Vulcan South while under investigation and BEFORE being issued federal environmental approvals. Around 50 hectares of land have already been cleared, including areas that we were assured would be protected.
Minister Plibersek has said she is investigating, but she hasn’t ordered Vitribute to stop work, and she is still going ahead with the assessment process for the Vulcan South Coal mine. We want work at Vulcan South to stop, and for the koala killing, climate wrecking, coal mine to be rejected.
Can you write to the Federal Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek, asking her to immediately stop all work at Vulcan South and reject Vulcan South coal mine?
Vitrinite already has a shocking record of environmental non-compliance. It has been issued an Environmental Protection Order by the Queensland government for releasing polluted water into local creeks at its already operating Vulcan coal mine. The company also cleared land outside of the approved boundaries of the Vulcan coal mine and failed to report breaches to the environment department. Vitrinite is a serial environmental offender that clearly does not take environmental laws seriously and should not be granted approval for the Vulcan South coal mine.
