Call Jackie Trad on Mining Rehab Laws

Before the last election, Queensland Labor promised they would ensure that ‘all land disturbed by mining activities is rehabilitated’.

But then they introduced a new Bill into Parliament which will allow mining giants to continue to leave vast, unfilled pit voids and waste dumps.

Existing or approved mines will be exempt from key measures and their plans will not be subject to public scrutiny.

And for new mines, all companies will need to do is argue it is too expensive for them to backfill and that the damage will only be ‘localised’.

Can you pick up the phone right now and call the Deputy Premier asking her to stick to her promises and fix the Bill?

If you live in South Brisbane, you can call the local electorate number on (07) 3724 9100

The phone will be answered by a staff member. Please remember to be polite. Here are some simple talking points that you can use:

  • Hi there, my name is XXX from YYY, and I’m calling today to ask Jackie Trad to fully deliver on her promises on mine rehabilitation.
  • I’d like you to pass this message on to the Deputy Premier, along with my name.
  • Loopholes in the mine rehabilitation Bill should be closed to make sure that all mined land must be rehabilitated. That includes existing mines.
  • Mining giants shouldn’t be allowed to leave behind gaping holes in the ground and mountains of waste under any circumstances.
  • All mining rehabilitation plans should be placed on public exhibition for the community to scrutinise.
  • North Queensland and the state will miss out on thousands of jobs in mine rehabilitation if the Bill isn’t fixed.
  • Queenslanders like me shouldn’t be left to deal with the mess left behind by the mining industry.
  • Thank you for your time.
