Bundy locals cautiously welcome AG’s view coal mine not in public interest

Bundaberg locals have cautiously welcomed the finding by Attorney General Deb Frecklington that Fox Resources’ coal mineral development licence is not in the public interest.

The West Australian company has been trying to build a coal mine in a fertile agricultural foodbowl between the Burnett and Kolan Rivers, only ten kilometres from Bundaberg, for four years.

The then Labor State Government twice recommended the company’s plans be rejected, finding the mine was not in the community’s interest. However, the latest recommendation was not made official, and the new LNP Government was required to make a new decision.

Coal Free Bundaberg spokesperson Cristel Simmonds said while it had been a frustrating, drawn out process, she was pleased with the Attorney General’s latest ruling.

“We welcome the update from the Attorney General. Every step feels like we're one closer to cutting MDL 3040 off for good.

“However, we've heard this before. It’s the third time a ‘not in the public interest’ preliminary view has been announced.

“What the public needs most is a definite decision; we are seeking certainty and finality. This coal project must be rejected once and for all so we can get on with our lives and continue enjoying this beautiful, coal free part of Queensland.”
