The small community of Wollar, near Mudgee, in NSW's central west, has been battling the expansion of the nearby Wilpinjong coal mine for over 10 years. They have not given up the fight.
Wollar Progress Association with the help of EDO NSW is taking the giant US coal company, Peabody Energy, to court to challenge the decision to expand the mine to within 1.5km of Wollar Village.
The main ground for the court challenge is that the approval of the mine expansion did not take into consideration the increased greenhouse gas emissions, as required by NSW policy.
More information on the case is on EDO website at: http://www.edonsw.org.au/wilpinjong_mine_extension
This case is important for all of us. It is the first time that the requirement to consider state and national climate change policies will be tested in court.
Please help us to show that there is a strong public interest in this important court case and give the Wollar community the support they need.
