Grants to Fracking companies

A Federal Senate Inquiry has uncovered shocking evidence of the potential serious mishandling of public money for fracking. The Federal Government wants to give away $50 million in grants to fracking companies in the NT.

We’ve learned that Traditional Owners’ voices and concerns have been continuously sidelined, all while Liberal Party donors are set to receive millions of dollars to frack the NT.

As Traditional Owner Johnny Wilson said to the Senate Inquiry: “If I had my way I'd say take it and shove it. My country is worth more than $50 million. My country is life. Please give us a fair go. Please, we are begging with our grieving hearts.”

“Just like the other Traditional Owners on Country, we are struggling to even get the basic maintenance for our land, for our community, and yet the government is willing to pour so much money into destroying our country.”

If you can think of a better way to spend $50 million in the NT, then we need you to take action.

Australian Senators have an important decision to make in the coming days. They have the power to disallow, to stop, the fracking grants going from the Federal Government to fracking companies.

Can you contact Federal Senators across the country who can stop these terrible fracking grants? Please leave a message with their office or send them an email and let them know:

  • Senator Malarndirri McCarthy and the Senate Committee have shown leadership in investigating the dodgy NT fracking grants and hearing from impacted Traditional Owners.
  • The inquiry found many Traditional Owners have not been consulted and do not consent to fracking on their Country.
  • The money could be so much better spent! Hospitals and schools in the Northern Territory are desperate for upgrades, private fracking companies don’t need our money.
  • Fracking company Empire Energy is set to get a whopping $21 million in public funds…  and their board and shareholders include major Liberal party donors.
  • Empire Energy had undisclosed meetings with the Government, all before the fracking grants were announced.
  • Please do the right thing for Australian taxpayers and all Territorians and disallow the Beetaloo fracking grants.

We need government to represent the people and not the miners and their donations to the political party. The sooner political donations are legislated against the better. Public paid campaigns should be more desirable. The sooner we have a Federal ICAC, that can shine the light on politicians we will be better off too.

I don’t expect this to make much difference because governments are known liars who listen to the man with the most money.

Too many lies are breaking, fracking this country apart.

Truth is my compass and I’m not afraid to stand up for myself. Now I’m lending a hand to the traditional ‘caretakers’ of this rich land, because of them we owe at least a debt of gratitude for the wealth and lifestyle afforded to us.

We cannot keep raping the land and not give back.

Already there has been so much damage done and there are scars on the landscape to prove how disgraceful greed and blind ambition has left a lasting legacy.

That’s a pretty poor effort by me, but it’s from the heart and we, as Australians have to listen to the elders, who treasure and cherish this country as it should be, before there’s nothing worthwhile to leave the younger generations.

So listen to your heart and do the right thing.

One person can only do so much but collectively we can achieve a more desired outcome for all concerned.

    Thank you.

Does this include leaving message with Senator Malarndirri McCarthy? Is it possible she could still vote for these subsidies?

I wan`t to support you with the NT fracking issue but as other supporters have commented calling politicians is mostly a waste of time.

Give us their email links and key points to adapt and we will and you will achieve more success.

    Hi,

I rang each of the five numbers you gave me for Queensland. Here is the result:

    Queensland

    Murray Watt, Labor

I left a message on the answering machine.

    Anthony Chisholm, Labor

I spoke to a receptionist and she said she’d pass it on. I gave her my phone number.

    Nita Green, Labor

Very attentive response from the person who answered the phone (Angelique). She said Nita Green was progressive and very concerned about environment. She said Federal Labor is progressive. She said the best thing to do is to send an email as she cannot tell the Senator about every call that she gets as she gets too many, but that if you send an email she can compile all the emails about a topic and then present them to the senator. I took the email address. She was very helpful and sympathetic.

Pauline Hanson, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party

Receptionist politely listened and suggested I send an email and gave me the email address.

Malcolm Roberts, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party

Receptionist politely listened and took my message and said she’d pass it on.

I called two senators offices in NSW. Left a message for each, to the effect that we do not need any more greenhouse gas emitting technologies anywhere, including the Northern Territory and especially not with public money.

Today I contacted offices of Kenneally, Mc Alister and O’Neill and briefly explained that I objected to proposal for taxpayers to shell out $50 million to NT fracking companies. I believe the taxpayers who would fund this would mainly be taxpayers who were not capable of minimising the tax they pay.
This $50 million would be more usefully be used to improve Public Schools’ education, Health services and Welfare for those in genuine need and to help adequately address Covid-19 due to which for the first time ever in human history we adults can no longer guarantee the air our children and grandchildren will breathe anywhere in the world will be safe to breathe. Covid-free air is one of our four essential needs and a future world in which the air is not safe to breathe is not a world I would like to visit in the future.

Methane is a far more potent ghg than carbon dioxide.

O’Neill’s diary manager suggested I should direct my comments at Bowen. I do not waste my time contacting many male politicians other than The Greens male politicians because male politicians appear to be far less empathetic than females.

    Breathe safely.

I too am appalled at the Federal Government’s underhand tactics in diverting public money into fossil fuel projects. As the traditional owners have said “Giving $50 million to mining corporations for an ‘economic recovery’ to start drilling will only line the pockets of huge corporations.”

I have taken Diane’s advice and sent an email message to the four Victorian opposition senators. It’s way beyond time this government too climate change seriously. (I blame Tony Abbott.)

Pleasant receptionist when I phoned Sen Green’s office, but she suggested that I put it in writing via email due to Senators being tied up with estimates Committee at present. I did this and cc’ed Sens. Chilholm and Watt as well

This is just plain ridiculous. I cannot believe that any government would give our money away to mining companies when we so desperately need more hospitals. My husband is a volunteer St John ambulance driver, not only is it dreadful that we rely on volunteers for this service, but when he gets the patient to the hospital – 40 minutes away, he is ramped. Solar energy, global warming – add them to your dictionary, take FRACKING OUT.

Please please no fracking. We have worked hard to stop this in our country, fracking is extremely dangerous and will turn beautiful lush landscapes into ugly barren trash which we do not need or want, please keep the Earth safe for us and our future generations.
