A Northern Rivers region free of unconventional gas mining has moved one step closer today, as the NSW Labor Party extends its policy to ban gas mining in the region to cover the Clarence electorate.
Lock the Gate NSW Coordinator Georgina Woods said, "This is a very important policy step by the NSW Labor Party, and we commend John Robertson for his announcement today.
"We're very pleased that the Labor Party has listened to the community and acted.
"It is a wise policy that recognises the risks that unconventional gas mining poses to land, water and communities.
"This commitment brings a Gasfield Free Northern Rivers one step closer to becoming a reality.
"With both the Labor Party and the Greens now committed to protecting the region from invasive gasfields, all eyes are turning to the National Party.
"Will they continue to ignore the overwhelming wishes of the community and allow unaccountable mining companies to undermine our democracy?
"We're calling on them to wake up and take urgent action to cancel the gas licences in the Northern Rivers region.
"The voters of the region are demanding action, and it is time that the National Party acted to defend our health and our communities - for good."
