BHP

BHP is one of the world’s biggest mining companies, and plans to expand its Queensland coal operations to dig out billions of tonnes of coal over coming decades. Find out how we’re cutting through the greenwash and exposing BHP’s coal plans.

Uncovering BHP’s dirty coal secret

BHP, one of the biggest mining companies in the world, has a dirty secret. While BHP likes to greenwash its image for its shareholders, behind the scenes BHP is pushing to expand its enormous, climate-wrecking Queensland coal mines.

These monster mines, if approved, would see BHP dig out 1.4 billion tonnes of dirty coal, spewing out four billion tonnes of climate pollution, the equivalent of a decade’s worth of Australia’s current emissions.

BHP tells its shareholders that it’s working to reduce emissions - but the dirty truth is, you can’t fake climate credentials while opening massive, climate-wrecking coal mines.

Expansion Plans

BHP has some of the biggest proposed coal mine expansions in Australia and the world, all in Queensland’s Bowen Basin including:

  • Peak Downs: 1,130 million tonnes of coal, 3 billion tonnes of climate pollution and mining coal for 93 years out to 2116
  • Saraji (East and Grevillea): 110 million and 33 million tonnes of coal respectively, at least 300 million tonnes of pollution and mining coal until 2045 and 2055 respectively.
  • Caval Ridge: 159 million tonnes of coal, 438 million tonnes of climate pollution, mining coal to 2056

Find out more about BHP’s coal plans

BHP’s monstrous coal expansion plans directly threaten our way of life. Australians have been hit with bigger and more frequent extreme weather disasters than ever before - made worse by coal mining from companies like BHP fuelling worsening climate change.

BHP's plan to keep digging coal for decades to come will intensify climate disasters and hit our communities already devastated by storms and floods.

BHP’s dirty mines would take billions of litres of water from Queensland communities and farms, destroy rare wildlife habitats and trash our climate - all in the name of BHP’s profit.

BHP thinks it can get away with greenwashing while expanding their dirty coal operations, but we won’t let them win.
