Call Deutsche Bank

Whitehaven Coal’s business is built on coal demand projections that would see the world breach international goals to limit global warming and would fuel catastrophic climate change.

Now it’s been revealed that an international bank that claims it is committed to the goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, is organising finance for the company, just as Whitehaven needs to raise $2 billion to fund three big new coal projects in Australia.

We’re getting on the phone to tell Deutsche Bank not to help bankroll Whitehaven Coal.

Here is the number to call: 02 8258 1234

Here are some things you might like to say:

  • Whitehaven Coal plans to expand the Narrabri Underground coal mine, and build the Vickery and Winchester South mines, which together would produce more than a billion tonnes of greenhouse gases.
  • Whitehaven Coal has a terrible environmental record. They have recently been found guilty of stealing water from parched inland rivers, they have emptied rural farming communities, cleared an irreplaceable forest and are ignoring the threat climate change poses to all Australians.
  • Any expansion of the coal industry is incompatible with the climate goals of the Paris Agreement and with the International Energy Agency’s net-zero by 2050 modelling, which sees “no new coal mines or mine extensions” from this year onward.
  • A Federal Court judge recently decided that building Whitehaven's Vickery Coal project would cause real harm to children, due to the climate change impacts that would result.
  • Deutsche Bank organising financial support for Whitehaven Coal is not consistent with your company’s climate change policy.
  • Deutsche Bank must now provide a clear commitment that it will take no further part in arranging finance for Whitehaven.  Ask them to take your contact details and get back to you with a response.

Calling is the best way to get your message to the Australian branch of the bank, but if you can't get through on the phone, you can send an email to [email protected]

Tweet this! Hey @DeutscheBank you can’t have a climate policy of net zero by 2050 AND arrange funding for Whitehaven Coal #windupWhitehaven #COP26

My call was received politely and my message (as detailed in your talking points, but in my own words) was taken down verbatim, and I was told it would be passed on to someone there appropriate.

I called Deutsche Bank & spoke with Teresa as the first contact.

Teresa typed up ALL of my comments regarding Whitehaven’s appalling history of Environmental Destruction & Illegal Water Theft.

This lady was very helpful & repeated back to me my lengthy statement(s).

I gave my email address so that Deutsche Bank can reply.

    Sincerely,

    David Marshall

I phoned DB and spoke to the admin person. She took all my details, (name, phone and email) and took an extensive message from me, in the process of developing/sending an email with my concerns to whoever in the company deals with such matters. I was somewhat taken aback by, but was very happy with, the effort to which she went to capture my major points. Hope it was useful.

I phoned the bank number and listened to a recorded message for about half an hour with long silences between the woman’s voice and eventually a phone call cut me off. It felt like they just wanted me to go away.

I picked up the phone and talked to receptionist Theresa who was very helpful and took my message for the CEO word for word. I was pointing out the DB has a net zero commitment by 2050 and that won’t happen if we keep building new coal mines and urging them to reconsider support for Whitehaven .

I had to leave a message with the receptionist who did write down what I had to say and repeated it. She said she could only put me through if I had a specific name. When she said was there anything further and I said no, I think that gets the message across she said Yes, it does.

Had to wait 10 minutes to get through. I could not talk to any one in management but was able to leave a message and left my phone number and email address. I pointed out that the bank was going against its own climate policy, the latest International climate report, putting its shareholders if they have any at risk of backing a failing business and put the bank at risk of being taken to court over failing to carry out a duty of care. I was told that there had been many similar calls taken today

Just rang and spoke to the girl who answered my call. She took my message and my details saying she could not let me speak to anyone as I did not have the name of a specific person. She typed my message and read it back to me. She was polite and said she would send it to the relevant person. It felt good to do.

I called straight away and left my details for a call or email back.

I was polite. She receptionist was polite but had no idea why I was calling.

I summarised that funding Whitehaven would be contrary to their bank’s stated Climate Change policies and that the parent company and shareholders would disagree with any funding of Whitehaven’s polluting proposals.

Many, many more people need to ring!
