Message the Premier - Acland Decision

Today, Acland farmers won the first ever community challenge against a coal project, the Acland Stage 3 expansion on the Darling Downs, in the High Court of Australia.

It’s a historic moment.

But it doesn’t mean the project is permanently beaten.  It means that it will now be sent back to the Queensland Land Court for a fresh review of the entire merits of the project.

The Premier has done the right thing, standing up to New Acland Coal and their advertising campaign, and waiting for the High Court decision.

Let’s thank her for that, and ask her to now finally end the uncertainty and negotiate the withdrawal of the mining project, whilst stepping in to support workers and the local community.

Leave a message for the Premier and Deputy Premier in the form at the bottom of this page and we’ll print them all out and present them with it.

Please thank them for what they have done so far to respect the High Court, but explain the effect on the local community has been too great and a restructuring package for workers and withdrawal of the project is needed.  The Darling Downs foodbowl is no place for a coal mine.

Please save this region, especially for for food production and not short-term mining, with long term pollution from more CO2 and a degraded landscape (which often the government- tax payers- must attempt to clean up.

Dear Premier- my husband and I are so happy that the Acland Community has been successful in their court case, and we appreciate that you have allowed this process to take place. Please do what you can to prevent this project going through. This is a farming community and our decent agricultural land should not be used for mining. Please support renewables for their potential to create stable employment instead of depending on the short term benefits of mining. with thanks

I agree with the previous messages so won’t repeat them. Enough is enough. It’s time to look to a clean future where people don’t have to fight for the right to keep their have a clean, mine free

    Dear Premier,

Thank you for your sane and proper actions to date.

Now please do whatever you can to wind up dirty coalmining and support mining communities in a transition to clean and sustainable employment, like growing hemp for fibre and paper manufacture.

Dear Premier Palaszczuk and Deputy Premier Miles, Thank you for your considered actions regarding the High Court case involving the Acland coal mine. As a long time Labor member, and member of LEAN, I would ask you to now negotiate the withdrawal of the mining project. Labor needs to lead the way in the transition to renewable energy and renewable jobs. We can do it together with the many different organisations and individuals who are committed to securing a safe environment for our descendants.

    In solidarity,

    Marion Ferguson

    Dear Premier,

Congratulations on your strong election victory!

Locals and farmers deserve your Governments support. Coal is old news.

Please continue to support the locals.

We can’t take any chances with our food and water supply. Coal mines should be rejected. They are so unneeded with renewable energy.

Dear Premier, I am so thrilled at the news of the High Court decision. The farming Community need all their resources to cope with our changing climate without having extra pressures from mining. It takes a long time to build up our topsoils. Something that mining cannot restore easily. With climate change our food and water are essential for our survival.

Dear Premier, this is your opportunity to step up and step in and show a clear direction in support of those workers and their families. Help them find employment in sustainable and diverse industries which will allow this region to be resilient and self proficient in the future. Show Australia how it can be ✅.

Thanks for waiting on the court decision on the proposed Acland coal mine. Please respect the court decision and reject this mine. Coal mining is environmentally toxic and has no place in a planet running on clean renewable power. Transitting to a clean power system is desperately important to help prevent more deadly bushfires, storms and floods.

Dear Premier Palaszczuk, thank you very much for resisting the enormous pressure you would have come under regarding the hold up to the granting of Stage Three of the Acland Coal Mine.

Good quality farming land with adequate water resources is scarce in Australia now and is likely to become even more so in future. Such land must be set aside for farming to ensure our welfare now and in future. We cannot put ourselves into a position where we are dependant on imported food and fibre because our good quality farming land and the water that primary producers depend on, has been permanently ruined. That’s a lesson that the pandemic should have taught us! No dirty, polluting, water hungry industry should be allowed on such land besides anything else, it’s a dying industry and there are too many gargantuan holes from past mining activities in Queensland already.

Please Premier, continue to respect the decision of the High Court.

The High Court have come to an important conclusion which cannot be ignored.

Acting on it will be a decisive and excellent solution for farmers, the community, the climate and all Australians.

Dear Premier. The high court has decided. The Darling Downs is no place for a coal mine. We need water and food not more dirty coal. Our planet is at a precarious tipping point . Our country is on fire. Homes destroyed. Animals crying in pain no where to flee to. Stand up to fossilised Murdock and his destructive grip on our leaders

Dear premier, I would like to thank you so much for holding out for the high court decision on the stage 3 Acland mine. The Darling Downs food bowl is not a place for a coal mine. The farming community very much need certainty and support now to get on with their lives and the business of growing and producing. Will you take it a step further and negotiate a complete withdrawal of the mining project and to assist in supporting the local communities.

    dear premier

coal is on the way out, nothing is clearer (see The Saturday Paper, january 30). and now the high court, no less, has sent a clear signal to the lower courts that concerns for land and water security must be taken into account regarding the granting of mining licences.

as premier, surely you should be helping to pave the way for future development rather than trying to forestall it!

the writing is on the wall. i know you don’t need me to tell you that. we have coal mines enough. the jobs of the future are being created right now, and the alternatives to coal are providing them (again, see The Saturday Paper, january 30).

it’s going to take imagination, education and leadership, and you’ve got what it takes!

(your biggest challenge will be confronting the righteous, paranoid, aggrieved, fundamentalist claptrap promulgated by rupert murdoch’s goons; but the tide is turning there, too… and, if it’s not, just pile on more coal and play your ukelele as the ship goes down!)

    good luck!

Congratulations to the Acland farmers for their strong and united stand .

Its not easy to take on the mining companies and to to be successful in a campaign against a proposal to develop a mine in a farming area .

Its great to see democracy in action and to know that community concerns are listened to in the democratic decision making process.

“Clean Water” is absolutely the first Priority in the Essentials of LIFE…..Dirty Coal “IS NOT”….We cannot eat or drink COAL !

Considering the need to leave COAL (CARBON) in the ground for the health of The Planet, which includes Queensland, the future is renewable energy and that is where all of our efforts must be directed. “NO TWO BOB EACH WAY” the courts have made a ruling, that ruling has to stand.

The Darling Downs food bowl is no place for a coal mine.

    The Acland Coal Mine Extention…

Premier, you said you would await the findings of the High Court and that has now been vindicated. This mine would be a DISASTER!

Negotiate a withdrawal of the mine project, deliver a restructure package for workers and support new jobs in agriculture and renewable energy.

    Greetings

Now the Higb Court has concluded that the case is valid by farmers against the Acland Mine. It would be advantageous to remove govt. support for it. In favour of the community and voter confidence.

    Kind regards
